Bringing it back, by coming new.
Music, Tattoos, Arcade, Food, Drinks, Art, A relaxed conversational atmosphere, and wait…“Hey DJ, bring that beat back!” Wait, a Cypher? Yes.
I found this, and a little more at “SKIN”, a first time event held on 4/26/12 at Black Market Tattoo and Piercing.
My Mission – To check the price of a tattoo, and the possibility of something different and “hot” to do in Columbus on a cold Thursday night. Well, – Mission accomplished. I found the event had an unsaid agreement of diversity and style in the air, along with the freedom to hang out, or explore the whole room.
Between The Tattoo artists and Bartender I found something even better, the evidence necessary to end an ongoing argument “Is Hip Hop Dead?” Well Hip Hop Heads – (In my Jay-Z voice) One, two, three, four, .. Breathe Easy! Hip Hop and Art is alive, and well, working like never before.
The cypher in the middle of the room was authentic, flowing from Emcee to Emcee and, without missing a beat, translating into Break dancing. When Emcee Jalen Ramsaw got the Mic, and went from beat to a cappella with the hook saying: “My music may never bring me to success, but it helps me to get this off my chest” — I smiled. It was all art, it was all love.

The mindset behind this type of event is that by bringing in a diverse crowd, it creates a breeding ground for Art. The various activities going on around the room strategically make for an interesting night for those who come out to enjoy, while simultaneously cross-training people in different art forms in the process. And, for the business-minded, the gravy on top? The different activities around the room, provide new and more ways to make money. Now that’s hot.
